Looking at the world through fresh eyes

It is easy to take for granted all the bounty that surrounds us in nature and the time we have with the little ones in our lives.  They are only little for a short time and it is during that time that we can help instill in them an appreciation for the outdoors and all the benefits of outdoor activities and all nature has to offer.  When we head outdoors with our children we often think we are doing it for them but really it is as much a gift for us.  Somehow when nature and kids come together you can experience the contentment of time standing still and just BE.  And if are out exploring with them long enough eventually a plant or bug will catch their eye.  When their eyes light up or their curiosity is piqued we get a glimpse at the magical way they see the world and get to be a part of that magic.

If you are looking for more opportunities to help your children learn about the natural world and would like help instilling an appreciation for nature in your children I encourage you to enroll in my Herbs for Kids series which runs from January through June.  We will be exploring new herbs each month, getting our hands in the action making easy herbal products, exploring the outdoors and much more from nature journaling to taking photos and blogging.  You can read more and register at http://www.landofmilkandhoneyherbs.com/classes.html.

Nature journaling as they learn about herbs and what they can do.
Ouch...didn't know those were growing there. Stinging nettles, nature's "gift" in our backyard? See those little hypodermic needles. :)
Wildcrafting on the prairie
Red clover...the perfect never ending task for a child.
Gathering treasures.
Bees buzzing on the burdock flowers as their food sources have become limited in late summer.
Our friend the mantis.
Cicada killer...seriously they defy gravity being able to fly around and carry those big bugs!
Identifying Gingkgoand harvesting the leaves for tea.
Little herbies journaling all that they found when out exploring.
A heart of elderberries.
A friendly little grasshopper.
