Seasonal Shifts

It is the time of year that some people relish as we move into the slower pace of fall and winter. Clear skies, delicious soups, and warm cups of cocoa nourish our souls and bring us into a place of peace. For many though, this shift of reduced daylight hours and reduced time spent outside can really tip them into feeling low.  There are several strategies such as getting good exposure to sunrise hours and being sure to spend 30 minutes outside that can help.  But when you aren't feeling your best it can be hard to have the motivation. This is one place that an herbalist can definitely help. Not only can we help you with strategies we can also be an ear to listen and support.  A custom herbal blend might be just the thing to get you past these lows or the irritability that is nagging you!  For those who aren't yet ready to take the step of working with someone on their whole health picture, we also have an off-the-shelf remedy by Prairie Star called Herbal Sunshine for this season when you might like a little sunshine in a bottle.  Make an appointment to come in and chat or an herb pick-up appointment to pick up a bottle to try!

Fire Cider Recipe

In my herbal intensive program we have been mixing up some good kitchen medicine. Last month we focused on this powerhouse for immune health. Fire cider is a traditional herbal remedy used for colds and flus. Give it a try at home!

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup fresh grated ginger root
1/2 cup fresh grated horseradish root, or less depending on your tolerance!
1 medium onion, chopped
10 cloves of garlic, crushed or chopped
2 cayenne peppers, chopped
1 lemon, chopped
Unpasteurized apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup raw local honey, to taste

OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS:
Several sprigs of fresh rosemary
2 tbsp chopped fresh turmeric
1 orange, chopped

DIRECTIONS:
Prepare all of the ingredients and place them into a quart sized jar. Cover all ingredients with apple cider vinegar. Use a piece of natural parchment paper or wax paper under the lid to keep the vinegar from touching the metal. Shake daily. After about 2 weeks you can eat it as is if you are feeling brave!  If you keep it in this form you can keep it for months and months!!
If taking it straight scares you a bit then wait another 2 weeks and strain it. Add 1/4 cup of honey and stir until incorporated. Taste your cider and add honey until you reach the desired sweetness. Keep refrigerated and use within 3-6 months. This can be used as a daily tonic or as needed when ill. It also makes a healthy and delicious salad dressing!
